A Spectacular Loch Coruisk Elopement, Isle of Skye
Scotland is a country with an abundance of spectacular scenery, with its golden beaches, vast mountain ranges and lush green landscape, it is no wonder that many couples from all over the world choose to come here to get married. Among some of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape is located on the beautiful Isle of Skye. I have had the honour and pleasure to photograph many elopements and weddings on the Isle of Skye over the years and It was wonderful to take another trip through the Scottish Highlands the to be wedding photographer for Laska and Robbs gorgeous Loch Coruisk elopement wedding last April and there could not be a more breath-taking backdrop.
Loch Coruisk (Coire Uisg in Scottish Gaelic, meaning ‘Cauldron of Water’) is an inland fresh-water loch reputed to be the home of a mythical water horse or Kelpie as it is known in Scotland, lying at the foot of the Black Cuillin on the Isle of Skye, in the Scottish Highlands. Accessible only by boat or a long trek through the Cuillin from Sligachan it is easy to see why this place is steeped in mystery and mythology.
In more recent years Loch Coruisk has become popular with couples looking for a remote and magical place to get married, and who can blame them. Every time I photograph a wedding here Loch Coruisk has something new to offer, the weather and atmosphere is everchanging. On the day of Laska and Robb’s elopement wedding the sun was bright in the blue sky with the snow-capped Cullin twinkling in the distance, I knew we had a great day ahead!
The Wedding Day
I met Laska and Robb at their Skye accommodation, Pier House in the Hamlet of Elgol, as they were finalising their preparations. Laska had chosen an exquisite vintage lace wedding dress with gorgeous beading detail, perfectly complimented by her hiking boots! Robb looked dapper in a tweed blazer and trouser in earthy orange, perfect to compliment the surrounding Scottish landscape. Once preparations were complete, we made the short walk to Misty Isles Boats who were charged with taking us on the boat journey to Loch Coruisk. At Elgol Pier we were joined by celebrant Sonja Eckl-Riel of Heart and Soul Ceremonies, who would later conduct the wedding ceremony.
After the stunning boat journey across to Loch Coruisk, we hiked to the perfect elevated spot overlooking the loch and to the Cullin mountains beyond. It was at this spot where Sonja beautifully conducted the wedding ceremony and a dram of whisky was drunk in celebration. Before catching the Misty Isles boat back to Elgol we took the opportunity to take some wedding photographs in this unique landscape.
Once we returned to Elgol I captured some more photographs making the most of the gorgeous weather and the unique backdrop of the Cullin hills across the water. After an amazing day we headed back to Pier House where Laska and Robb cut their cake (I loved the Totoro cake topper, which was very much approved of by my daughter who is a huge anime fan!). As the day was drawing in it was time to say cheerio and leave Laska and Robb to celebrate their wedding together.
Feeling Inspired?
If you are feeling inspired by Laska and Robb’s beautiful elopement in Scotland and would like more information about visiting the Isle of Skye, I would highly recommend the Isle of Skye and Visit Scotland websites. If you plan on making the dream of eloping to Scotland a reality the National Records of Scotland has information about how to go about it officially.
